CunninLynguists
There has never been an anomaly in hip-hop quite like the southern trio
CunninLynguists. Sampling a wide range of musical genres, they have been musically compared to UGK and Atmosphere in the same breath. They have toured and shared stages with many notable artists including Kanye West and Macklemore, and have produced for Lil' Scrappy as well as KRS-One. They have crafted songs with international soul superstar Cee-Lo Green and politically charged indie-favorite Immortal Technique... on the same album. CunninLynguists have eschewed categories, boxes and labels for 13 years, 5 albums and 5 official mixtapes, all while having what XXL Magazine described as the "Most Hated Name In Rap". The result? If you want labels... Southern boom-bap. Too white for BET, and too black for MTV2. A preacher's son, a Caucasian guy from rural Georgia and a convicted felon. But mainly they are the epitome of a self-made career, one of the most consistent catalogs of any current hip-hop act and one of the most loyal, worldwide fanbases in all of indie rap music.Backed with gritty beats, quality rhymes and 808 thump, the 'Lynguists intend on recapturing the soul in southern hip-hop. With what Spin Magazine calls "Outkast's tragicomic poignancy", Deacon The Villain, Kno and Natti continue their quest of painting a picture meant to remind the world that politics, death, racism, relationships, religion and struggle are just as relevant now as ever.
The group has toured worldwide and appeared at several major European festivals including Splash, Open Air Fraunenfeld, Touch The Lake / ZĂĽrichfest, Hultsfred, Quart, and in front of 20,000 people at Hip Hop Kemp in the Czech Republic.
CunninLynguists’ most recent project, Strange Journey Volume 3, was released on April 1st, 2014 in conjunction with Bad Taste Records and Ineffable Music Group. The album boasts guest spots from Del The Funky Homosapien, Murs, Zumbi of Zion I, Masta Ace and Grieves.
J-Live
New York based MC J-Live was born Jean-Jacques Cadet. He is commonly known as Justice Allah since adopting the culture of the 5% Nation in the mid 90s while attending State University of New York at Albany. He first garnered notice with the release of his 1995 single "Bragging Writes".
Delivering his thoughtful lyrics with confidence and ease, J-Live's rapping was strong and his soul-inflected grooves immediately appealed to fans of underground hip-hop. A year later he followed up with another hit, "Hush the Crowd", and started to generate a palpable buzz. With tracks produced by luminaries such as Prince Paul, DJ Premier, and Pete Rock, the release of J-Live's full-length debut, "The Best Part", was hotly anticipated and the future looked promising for the ascendant MC.
At this point, though, J-Live was beset by a host of troubles. Amidst constant label shuffling and plagued by a series of illegal bootlegs, the release of "The Best Part" was delayed for four years. There was some talk that J-Live was behind some of the bootlegs -- a few of which were of extremely high quality -- and the ongoing saga became something of an underground legend.
In the interim, J-Live worked as an eighth-grade teacher in Brooklyn, NY, and continued to embellish and refine his debut. He kept good company, making cameo appearances on strong albums like Handsome Boy Modeling School's "So...How's Your Girl?" and J. Rawls' "The Essence of J. Rawls". The Best Part finally enjoyed its official release in the fall of 2001. All of the Above followed one year later, and 2003 brought a two-part mini-LP tribute to his early days, Always Has Been and Always Will Be. J-Live released his third LP, "The Hear After", in 2005 on the Penalty (Ryko) label and followed up with the "Reveal the Secret" EP in 2007. "Then What Happened?" debuted on BBE Records the following year.
He then began to put out his own records and released the "Undivided Attention EP" in 2010 as a prelude to 2011's full length release "S.P.T.A. Said Person of that Ability". He has since changed his longtime corporate identity of Triple Threat Productions Inc to Mortier Music LLC. As an emcee, dee jay, producer, J-Live's music, old and new, continues to be a staple of inspiration for listeners of underground hip hop.
The Difference Machine
From a distant star in the universe, came an unlikely source of strength. When humans look at the stars they don't realize that their light is millions of years old. Traveling inside of one of these beams of light was a pod. This pod was composed of elements foreign to the earth and its chemical makeup was some sort of twisted arrangement of metals bonded into strands of DNA. Nobody knows exactly why this pod was headed to earth, but upon entrance into the planet's atmosphere, the pods foreign elements mixed with those of the earth and created a blaze so brilliant, that from land it looked like there were two suns in the sky. The pod crashed in to the earth's surface, sinking the city of Atlanta underneath the ocean. This was 7777 years ago. Since then, a new Atlanta has been constructed near that ocean in the state of Georgia. As the pod lay at the ocean floor, strange things began to happen. The pod began to unravel. Lights started flashing on it and weird beeps could be heard for miles away. Slowly the motherboard on the pod began running start-up programs. Next were protocols and data analysis. Before long this pod had transformed as to what could only be described as some sort of metallic shape-shifting craft. It began to move. As it moved, its memory protocol just updated. Analysis showed that 35% was corrupted. Soon the answers to the essential questions started coming in. The what? It was a DM model 00-00 in Earth language. The where? It had been sent from a distant star in a cluster known as the intergalactic belt of Psycho Arminus. As this craft tried to access the what and the why, it was met by disk read errors. "Unable to locate file." As it read its profile, it located various weapons, all consisting of sonic charges. Things such as frequency maximizers and multi-band compression filters were found all over its body. It traveled towards land as it did its sensors detected life forms. This is where the story begins.
